Mt. Amadablam (6812m) is one of the prettiest mountains that dominate the sky above the famous trekker’s trail-the Everest Base Camp trail. ‘Ama’ means mother and ‘Dablam’ means the sacred ornament box worn by ladies in the Sherpa community. The glacier lying on the Southwest face of the mountain looks like a jewel box hanging on the neck of the mountain. Therefore, the mountain is named Ama Dablam, the literal meaning of which is ‘The Mother’s Jewel box’.  This alluring mountain was first attempted by Mike Gill (NZ), Barry Bishop (USA), Mike Ward (UK) and Wally Romanes (NZ) on March 13, 1961. Since then the mountain has attracted many climbers and still continues to do so.

The Expedition: The Ama Dablam expedition is typically a 30 day expedition in the Everest region of Nepal. About 16 days are required to conquer the three high camps set above the base camp and the summit. Other days are spent trekking through the scenic Khumbu valley below Tengboche. The expedition starts with a scenic flight to Lukla, from where, following the Everest base camp trail, we hike all the way up to Tengboche. From Tengboche, leaving the Everest base camp trail we head towards the Ama Dablam base camp.

The mountain is attempted from its south-west ridge. It’s a technically difficult route that requires you to pass through the toughest and the most difficult saddle ridges, rocky ground and the boulders up till the first camp; severe rocky bowl and ridges through the fixed line up till the second camp; steep mixed alleyways of rock, ice and snow, sloping snow ground, steep snow and ice tunnel and the path along the snow ridge up till the third camp. From the third camp to the summit, it’s a steep climb on snow and ice, along the huge hanging glacier. The top presents magnificent view of Mt. Everest, the Island peak, Makalu, the Khumbu Himalayas and other surrounding snow capped peaks. After successfully climbing the mountain, we return, following the same route used earlier down till Lukla, from where we take a flight back to Kathmandu.

While in Kathmandu your accommodation and meal (bed and breakfast only) is arranged in a hotel. From Lukla to Tengboche full board meal and accommodation is arranged in the lodges, where we stop for overnight. During the climb the accommodation and meal are arranged in the tented camp. You will be guided by experienced and certified climbing and trekking guides and other crew members during the entire expedition.

Apart from the expedition, you can also enjoy the floras and faunas in the Sagarmatha National Park, alluring landscape, mesmerizing scenery,  and the culture, tradition and warm hospitality of the Sherpa people, residing in the Khumbu region.  Spring (April-May) and Autumn (September-October) are the best months to plan this expedition. If you are looking to avoid traffic, planning the expedition early winter  is also considered a good idea.

Moreover, if you are looking for an expedition away from the Khumbu  Visit Nepal 2020 can  make some of the best arrangements for  Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, or even Kanchenjunga expedition.
